Ecoefficiency Guide to Banking Services

EcoEficienciaThe Ecoefficiency Guide to Banking Services is intended to provide Latin American commercial bankers with analysis criteria and implementation tools in order to more effectively manage environmental and social risks in their banks' internal operations as well as in their external relations, products and services.

This guide is based on the findings and experience of leading Swiss and international banks. The experience show that ecoefficiency definition of the concept is not only good environmental/social practice, but it also reduces operational costs and provides for strategic competitive advantage in the globalized financial markets.

This guide is an adaptation of the UNEP guidelines to environmental management in financial institutions. The UNEP Financial Institutions Initiative on the Environment made these guidelines available to banks across the world through the Initiative's web site.

In addition, the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) has duplicated them it with permission from UNEP to make them available to the entire Latin American financial sector.Ecoefficiency concerns many areas of banking. This guide has therefore been designed for the following departments and areas of concern:

"One of the major thrusts of the UNEP Initiative is the development of a global network to enable the sharing of best practices among members, who represent over 33 countries, and to facilitate member access to management tools and other resources for taking concrete environmental actions in all functional areas of their business.

Both UNEP and the Initiative's Steering Committee are convinced that these guidelines will serve as an excellent framework for any bank or financial institution, regardless of size or type, to use in developing and implementing environmentally sound policies and programs. Your willingness to make these available to the financial sector at large will significantly enhance our efforts to promote environmental responsibility throughout the financial services sector globally"

Linda Descano

Chair of the Steering Committee to the UNEP Financial Initiative

We want to express our gratitude to The Tinker Foundation for their financial support for the first version of the site and to the AVINA GROUP for its assistance throughout the whole process.
