In its first stage, the research focused on analyzing global trends in the environment/competitiveness relationship and on understanding how those trends affect Latin American companies.
In its second stage the CLACDS research aimed at identifying competitiveness opportunities and risks for Latin American companies deriving from their environmental performance. Environmental sustainability studies were made of more than 17 agro-industrial and tourism clusters, leading to significant lessons. It could be shown that a large and growing demand exists for environmentally sustainable tourism. In addition, ways were identified for provoking substantial leaps in exports of agricultural goods produced with more environmentally and socially responsible processes. At the same time it was found that serious and growing risks exist in international markets for exports of goods and services linked to harmful environmental and health practices.
